24th Jorvik Viking festival
18th – 22nd February 2009

Each year, Vikings from around the world gather here to fight, trade, and celebrate their culture. A fascinating collection of displays, events, lectures and workshops offer a glimpse the true character of this great travelling civilisation....video intro.

 The theme of this years festival focuses on the period after the Norman conquest. Yorkshire had always been a rebellious place and king William built castles here to effect his brutal suppression. In an unlikely turn of events the king of the Danes returned to York in 1069 with an army which included English nobles and one rightful heir to the English throne.... hear more (free mp3)
 

Time Travellers was a poetry event run by Adrian Spendlow and Jorvik. Visitors to the festival were asked to describe their feelings about Viking culture in poem form, the results were astounding.....read them here.

The Festival fleet has landed in Coppergate Square! Meet its commander and hear him recite ancient poems. Experience a variety of activities that explore Viking life on water and on dry land.
